WHAT'S INCLUDED

Everything you need to clear customs cleanly

Every Import/Export Compliance Memo Package covers the same complete scope. No upsells, no surprises.

  • Product import/export checklist and memorandum

A written compliance memo detailing the import or export process for your specific products, documentation required, and the agency-by-agency path through clearance.

  • HTS classification and licensing review

We classify your product under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and identify all licensing or registration requirements (FDA, EPA, CPSC, BIS, TTB, USDA, etc.) that apply.

  • Packaging, labeling, and ingredient review

Review of product packaging, labels, and ingredient lists for compliance with U.S. customs and partner-agency requirements — flagging legal issues before they cost you a shipment.

  • Direct calls and emails with your trade attorney

Talk to the lawyer doing the work. No phone tree, no paralegal in the middle. Ongoing access throughout the engagement to address your questions.

  • Review of customs and agency responses

When customs raises questions or an agency requests additional information, we read their requests and tell you what they actually need.

  • Coaching on response strategy

We coach you through your response to agency findings or customs questions — what to push back on, what to concede, and how to keep your shipments moving.

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps from order to compliance memo

Most compliance memos are delivered within 10-15 business days, depending on product complexity and number of agencies involved.

  1. Submit your product information

Use the order form below. Upload product details — labels, ingredient lists, spec sheets, marketing materials (PDF up to 25 MB), pay the flat fee, and we begin same-day.

  2. We classify and research

A trade attorney classifies your product under the HTS, identifies agency requirements (FDA, EPA, CPSC, BIS, USDA, etc.), and researches licensing obligations specific to your import/export scenario.

  3. Receive your memo and counsel

Receive your written compliance memo with the classification, agency requirements, documentation checklist, and process roadmap. Schedule follow-up calls to address specific questions before you ship.

QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What information should I provide for the compliance memo?
At minimum: product description, intended use, country of origin (for imports) or destination (for exports), and any existing classification work. Helpful but optional: product labels, ingredient or composition lists, marketing materials, spec sheets, and supplier or buyer information. You can send additional documents after we set up your project.
How long does a compliance memo take?
Most memos are delivered within 10-15 business days from engagement. Simpler product classifications can close faster; products requiring review by multiple partner agencies (FDA, EPA, USDA, etc.) may take longer. We’ll give you a specific timeline once we see your product details.
What if my product needs FDA, EPA, or other agency clearance?
The memo identifies every agency whose requirements apply to your product and tells you what each one needs. We don’t file agency registrations as part of this engagement, but the memo gives you the roadmap and we can quote the registration work separately if you need us to handle it.
Can you classify products that haven't been imported before?
Yes — that’s a common use case. New products, products with novel ingredients, or products in regulated categories often don’t have obvious HTS classification. We research comparable rulings, agency guidance, and binding ruling precedent to identify the most defensible classification.
What if customs disagrees with our classification?
The compliance memo provides our best-supported classification with research backing. If customs challenges it, we can quote additional work to handle the response — including binding ruling requests, protests, or post-summary corrections. The memo itself is the foundation for that work; you don’t redo it.
Do you handle customs detentions or seizures?
Yes, but as a separate engagement. Customs detention and seizure work is time-sensitive and scoped differently from the Compliance Memo — we quote it based on the specific situation. If you’re facing an active hold or seizure, reach out immediately rather than ordering this package.
Will you talk directly with my freight forwarder or customs broker?
Yes, when it helps move the work forward. We can coordinate directly with your customs broker, freight forwarder, or agency contacts to gather information or confirm details. You stay in the loop throughout.
Is this for U.S. import/export or international trade more broadly?
This package focuses on U.S. customs and U.S. agency requirements. For foreign-jurisdiction compliance (e.g. EU REACH, China export controls, country-of-destination regulations) we can connect you with counterparts in the relevant country or quote that work separately.
